Search for Executive Vice President and Provost

About the Role
The Executive Vice President and Provost is the Chief Academic Officer of the university and reports to the President. The position also serves as the second highest official, behind the president, and is responsible for the university's instructional, research, and outreach programs, the graduate school, research and innovation, libraries, student affairs and has senior management and leadership responsibilities for the colleges and academic administrative units, including faculty affairs, academic resource management, undergraduate academic affairs, and enrollment management. The Executive Vice President and Provost is directly involved (in partnership with the President and Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer) in developing the budget, allocating and managing resources, and developing university strategy and policies. The incumbent plays a significant role in the overall governance of the university, in curricular development, and in the selection, promotion, and approval for tenure of faculty. The Executive Vice President and Provost also serves as a liaison with the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV).
Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Provost are the Deans of Agriculture and Life Sciences; Architecture, Arts, and Design; Business; Engineering; Graduate School; Honors College; Liberal Arts and Human Sciences; Natural Resources and Environment; Science; University Libraries; Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine; and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Additional reports include the Vice President for Health Sciences and Technology, Vice President for the Greater Washington D.C. Area, Vice President for Outreach and International Affairs, Senior Vice President and Chief Research and Innovation Officer, Vice President for Student Affairs, and the Commandant of the Corps of Cadets. Within the Provost’s Office, direct reports include the Associate Vice Provost for Communications and vice provosts led by the Executive Vice Provost. The Executive Vice President and Provost serves as the university’s acting leader when the president is away from campus.
