Initiatives

As Virginia’s most comprehensive university and leading research institution, Virginia Tech is in a unique position to serve as a force for positive change in the commonwealth, the country, and the world.   The president’s initiatives are intended to reinforce the university’s mission, values and commitment to our living motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

Beyond Boundaries

In 2015, President Sands challenged the university community to imagine Virginia Tech’s role in higher education a generation into the future.  The result – Envisioning Virginia Tech Beyond Boundaries – lays the foundation for the university’s strategic planning process, including the development of InclusiveVT, Destination Areas, VT-Shaped Learning, and the Partnership for an Incentive Based Budget.

The Virginia Tech Carilion Health Sciences and Technology Campus in Roanoke is a collaborative partnership with Carilion Clinic.  The growing campus, including the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute, is intended to enhance the university’s research profile, provide experiential learning opportunities, and catalyze economic development in the region.

Increasing Endowment by 2022

Virginia Tech’s endowment improves the university’s financial resilience, enhances programmatic excellence, and assists in recruiting and retaining the best faculty and students. Having recently surpassed $1 billion, President Sands has set a goal of $1.6 billion by 2022.

Increased Philanthropic Giving

Increased philanthropic giving will allow Virginia Tech to improve access and affordability for students, and advance capital projects that support the university’s mission.   President Sands has set a goal of 22% alumni giving by 2022, and a sustained $250 million in annual gifts and commitments by 2027.

Top-100 Global University

Becoming a Top-100 Global University is an important indicator of excellence.  It is also key to becoming a destination for global talent and partners, which is essential for Virginia Tech to generate the economic activity the commonwealth needs.

Achieving Scale through Moderate Growth

As a comprehensive land-grant research institution, moderate growth offers important advantages, including academic strength across all three mission areas of learning, discovery and engagement.  We seek to be more efficient and generate more resources that can be invested in affordability and quality while preserving our small-campus feel and strong sense of community.
