Virginia Tech's president is appointed by the university's Board of Visitors to initiate proposed policies, to execute approved policies, and to administer the university. The president serves as the authorized officer through whom communication takes place between the board and the faculty, the board and the students, and the board and the other officers of administration or instruction employed by the university. The board, as the governing authority of the university, delegates to the president the authority to oversee and to administer the policies of the board and to manage the administrative, instructional, research, and public service programs of the university.

Appointed by the Board of Visitors on Dec. 6, 2013, Timothy D. Sands serves as the 16th president of Virginia Tech, and began his tenure on June 1, 2014. He was officially installed as the university's 16th president on October 17, 2014.
