Virginia Tech goes high tech in Northern Virginia |
| Virginia Tech has a growing presence in the high-tech world of Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., through its Alexandria Research Institute (ARI). | ||
The institute provides advanced educational opportunities for high-tech employees in the Washington area; Tech faculty easier access to federal funding agencies, research laboratories, and industrial research centers; and allows the university to interact more effectively with universities and research institutes, nationally and internationally. ARI work focuses on computer networks, fiber-optics, wireless communications, software engineering, micro-electronics systems design, and energy systems. The World Institute for Disaster Risk Management is also located at ARI. ARI offers joint teaching and collaborative research opportunities, as well as student and faculty exchanges with domestic and international institutions. It brings together researchers from different disciplines, providing an opportunity for the emergence of new ideas and collaboration on a variety of specialized technical fields. The institute also provides opportunities for industrial researchers to collaborate with Virginia Tech faculty through industrial scientist-in-residence programs. Virginia Tech departments involved in research at ARI include aerospace and ocean engineering, civil and environmental engineering, electrical and computer engineering, industrial and systems engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, mining and minerals engineering, and computer science.
